Can Statins Make You Stupid

By Dr. Bill

Statins like Lipitor and Crestor are all over the news these days, but you probably haven't seen a shocking report out of Iowa State University that I just read.

The medical community is caught in a major controversy about their effectiveness, and what their side effects are.

I can tell you that the side effects of statins range from eye problems, to muscle pain, to liver disorders, to heart arrhythmias. A friend of mine developed horrible shoulder pain every morning when he woke up. Once he quit taking Lipitor, his shoulders felt much better within days.

And in the study I just read by Yeon-Kyun Shin, a biophysics professor in the department of biochemistry, biophysics and molecular biology at Iowa State University, he states that statins, by reducing cholesterol, could be diminishing memory and thinking power.

In other words, statins not only block the liver from forming cholesterol, but they might also prevent the brain from forming it as well.

Dr. Shin postulates that there's a direct link between neurotransmitters in the brain and cholesterol. It's pretty simple too: Lower, or no cholesterol could mean damaged brain function.

Some statin drugs block cholesterol in the liver, so it's not such a stretch that they might also do so in the brain.

One way to make sure your brain is healthy is to get enough essential omega 3 fatty acids, especially DHA, which comprises about 30% of the entire weight of the brain. If you're taking a statin, or not, remember to feed your brain pharmaceutical grade fish oil.

Cholesterol is not the only way to judge a heart problem. Statins are widely over-prescribed, although they can be useful in treating cholesterol. If you're suffering from any of the side effects, your doctor should know about it. And you should tell him you want off the drug.

There are a number of natural alternatives to statins, such as enteric coated pharmaceutical grade fish oil that feeds your heart, brain and joints exactly what they need, on a daily basis. - 15437
