Ways to get your dog to stop digging

By Craig Vic

I'm sure dog owners who have a yard full of open holes are wondering how to get a dog to stop digging? Your poor lawn and flowers could definitely use the break. Well, the good news is that it's really not that difficult of a process.

Negative reinforcement is an absolute no-no when it comes to teaching your dog not to dig. You must remember it is instinctual for a dog to dig.

If you do physically harm your dog you will turn the matter into an even worse situation.

There could be a few different reasons why the dog is digging. It could be that he smells something that he really likes. Even if that isn't the case, don't you think if the dog smelled something he didn't like, it would be a possible motivation to stop digging? You bethca!

You could find what smells your dog is not fond of, then place those smells around your yard. A great example would be something like mouthwash, which most dogs really don't like.

If your dog hates the smell of mouthwash as much as mine does, his curiosity of digging will depreciate.

You can also prevent your dog's digging habits in certain holes by placing foul smells such as your dogs poop inside of the hole. That's a real sneaky way to do it.

It's a known fact that dogs hate having poop on their feet. (I guess they are not any different than us humans). - 15437
