How Do You Make a Return When You Shop Online?

By A Nutt

One of the advantages of buying at the mall is that you can simply walk back into the store to return the item that you don`t want after all. However, online shopping isn`t quite as straightforward. It`s a good idea to know what to do if you don`t like something once it has arrived . . . how do you return it?

Online Shopping Raises Chances of Returns

While online shopping is definitely a huge plus in today`s busy lifestyle, it does mean that you will find yourself with some things that just don`t work. When you can`t actually hold a product in your hand or try it on before you move on to buying it, it just stands to reason that you will end up with a pair of jeans that doesn`t fit or a toy that just isn't what you expected. It`s going to happen, so you need to know what to do.

Most online stores have a return policy. Online retailers understand that there is a chance you won`t like what you receive. They also understand that consumers don`t want to buy without a guarantee, so they will usually take the items back, whether for credit or for a full refund depends on the program.

Making Returns After Buying Through a Rewards Program

If you are using a rewards program to do your shopping (and you should be if you want to make the most of your shopping experience), then it's important to note that you cannot return anything through the rewards program. This is a gateway program, not a retailer.

So, when you are looking at a product you are interested in buying, even if it is through a rewards program, make sure you take a look at the retailer`s website. Look for their return policy. This is the important part, should you need to return the items, since the actual rewards program cannot take returns.

While the majority of retail websites will have similar return policies, it`s a good idea to read each one, just to be sure. Sometimes there is something extra that you will need to know in order to send something back. It`s also a good idea to check for the following:

- Time limits. How long do you have before you can return the item? 30 days? 60? Be sure you understand this part. - Shipping. Who pays? Some retailers offer free return shipping, but in many cases, you`ll have to cover this yourself. - Type. What kind of return will you be getting? Depending on the company, you may only receive store credit, but some places will offer a full refund. If you are just returning something that didn`t fit, store credit should be fine.

It doesn`t take much time to check out an online store`s return policy and this can save you a lot of time and hassle in the future. Shop online, but do it with open eyes and preparation and you`ll be able to shop with peace of mind, knowing that anything you purchase that doesn`t turn out to be as great as it looked on the webpage can be returned. And, while you are online shopping peacefully, you`ll be earning those rewards by shopping via the rewards program. It`s fun and saves time to shop online. As long as you are aware that you need to make any returns through the actual retail site as opposed to the rewards program, you`ll be able to really enjoy browsing and purchasing online as you save on gas. - 15437
